Why Are My Brakes Grinding When Stopping?

If you hear your brakes grinding as you come to a stop during your Hubbard commute, then there are few likely causes:

  • Brake Pads: This is usually why your brakes are making a grinding noise as you come to a stop. Over time, brake pads lose their thickness. This means that there’s less padding between the parts of the brake pads and your brakes, which can lead to what’s known as “brake scrubbing”. This can create a grinding noise, especially as the brake pads wear down further and further.
  • Brake Disc & Calipers: If these parts wear down, they can cause your brake pedal to rumble slightly as you drive. This can create a squeaking or grinding noise.
  • Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): Sometimes, your ABS may just be in use. This system assists in helping your vehicle come to a stop. If you apply the full brakes when coming to a stop, then this system can cause a grinding noise and may also cause your brake pedal to vibrate.

Why Are My Brakes Grinding When Driving?

You may hear your brakes making a grinding noise when you drive and not just when you stop. If this is the case, then it could just be rocks or other kind of debris from the Grove City roads bouncing off your Honda car’s caliper or rotor. While this is usually an easy fix, it’s important that you get this issue resolved as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

If you need to have your brakes serviced, take advantage of our service specials at Shenango Honda, so you can save on your visit to our service center!
