Auto Mechanic Checking Oil

Your oil is responsible for moving the parts around in your engine smoothly as well as your engine clean. Over time, your oil collects too much debris and needs to be changed, which is why it’s important to check your oil often. Instead of bringing in your vehicle to a Sharon service shop, learn how to check oil level in a car with Shenango Honda. Then, visit our service center if you’re in need of an oil change or any service repairs.

How to Check Oil Level in a Car Step by Step

To check your oil levels at home, the process is as simple as performing the following steps:

  1. Park the vehicle on a level area, and make sure the engine is turned off and cooled down.
  2. Open the hood, and locate the dipstick. Keep in mind that before you check your vehicle’s oil level, some vehicles have electric motors that don’t use a dipstick. You can consult your owner’s manual to find out if your engine uses a dipstick or not.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and wipe off any oil from the end.
  4. Put the dipstick back into the tube, then pull it out and look at both sides to see where the oil level is.

If your oil level is between the full and empty markings, then your oil level is fine. If it’s below the empty marking, then you’ll need an oil change. Check your owner’s manual to see what kind of oil is needed in your car, remove the oil filler cap, and add oil a little bit at a time until you’ve reached the appropriate level.

Resetting the Oil Change Light

Now that you know how to check oil level in a car and can determine when you need to get the oil changed, you can reset the oil change light after you’ve had an oil change. To reset the light, follow this process:

  1. Turn off the systems of your car, and leave the engine on.
  2. Locate the “reset” button or “reset” stick on the dashboard. You can usually find it near the speedometer or the fuel gauge
  3. Hold down the button until the oil change light starts flashing.
  4. Turn the ignition off, wait a few seconds, and turn the car on.

If you would rather have our service team reset the light for you, we invite you to schedule a service appointment. Our friendly, knowledgeable team is here to help with anything your vehicle might need.
